Ankeny Iowa’s new senior community center is receiving a $500,000 donation from residents Dennis and Susan Albaugh.

It’s a sport with a silly name that’s gaining in popularity across the country including Mills County and southwest Iowa.

The Community Foundation of Marshall County awarded grants from the Rebuild Marshalltown Fund to the City of Marshalltown, Iowa’s new Pickleball Pocket Park.

SIOUX CITY — Three of Riverside Park’s tennis courts will be converted into eight pickleball courts and the two remaining tennis courts will be refurbished.

Owners of the popular Smash Park, which launched the popularity of pickleball in the Des Moines area, are selling the building in which the activity-based restaurant and bar is located.

The Gooding Recreation district now has pickleball. Courts are available from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 315 14th Ave. E. in Gooding. There is no current charge for paddles, balls, and court time. Call Smokey Legarreta at 208-539-0710 for more information.

IOWA CITY — One day, after swimming laps at the North Dodge Athletic Club, retired professor James Broffitt wandered into the gym and saw people playing a lively game with squarish paddles, a Wiffle ball and a slightly-lower tennis net. The sport was pickleball and six year later, Broffitt still is hooked.

The City of Carroll, Iowa, will be contracting with FEH Design for the design, development and bid administration of pickleball courts.
