One of the fastest growing sports in the country is making its mark in Lexington County.

The first courts operated by the town of Summerville South Carolina will be offered at no charge to the general public.

In a testament to a popular and fast-growing sport that has taken the Lowcountry by storm, LTP Daniel Island is now offering pickleball instruction for club members, youths and guests.

Pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport, and there are definitely some Greenville, SC, players among those numbers.

On a brisk Saturday morning in February, Daniel Island was bursting with outdoor activity, especially at the pickleball courts where a group of at least 20 people gathered and engaged in lively matches on the four small courts.

It’s a new year, so how about trying a new sport: pickleball. Seriously, that’s the goofy name of a fast-growing game that’s a combination of tennis, ping-pong and badminton.

The game with the funny name is now part of the curriculum at a local school. A pickleball program has been established in the P.E. class at Tall Pines STEM Academy. For a few weeks this fall, students play pickleball during their daily P.E. class.

What is pickleball? New to Colleton, pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity at the Colleton County Recreation Center.

“Anybody from Alabama?”

“Not that I’m aware of…not that I’m aware of,” said Michele.

“So they didn’t evacuate?”

“Not that I’m aware of.” Michele said.
