It’s the fastest growing sport with those over 55. It’s why the city converted the tennis courts near Columbia Ridge Elementary School to pickleball courts. And it’s how Recreation Supervisor Josh Johnson got his job.

At a Dec. 2 meeting, Washougal residents Harrison Roberts and Mike Wolfe asked the Port commissioners to consider adding a 12-court indoor pickleball facility to the waterfront development.

In the rapidly expanding pickleball universe, Barney McCallum was a rockstar. McCallum, one of the game’s original founders and a familiar face on Bainbridge Island, would show up to tournaments and events where he’d sign paddles, pose for pictures and chat about the game with those who’d picked it up since he helped to launch it half a century ago. It was his sport. McCallum, one of Bainbridge’s famed pickleball pioneers and the sport’s last living founder, died Monday in Seattle of natural causes, family members said. He was 93.

A pickleball festival is coming to Birch Bay, Washington, giving locals the opportunity to partake in one of America’s fastest growing sports.

The inaugural Bainbridge Island Founders Pickleball Tournament was held last weekend at the temporarily repainted tennis courts at Bainbridge High School.

Marking 50-plus years since the sport’s creation, the multi-day event saw more than 250 players from around the region converge on Bainbridge, the birthplace of the game.

Kirkland, WA’s new pickleball program has introduced three new pickleball courts at Everest Park and includes multiple upcoming opportunities for players to develop their skills. The program features instructional clinics, equipment rentals, pickleball party packages, a competitive fall pickleball league and drop-in indoor pickleball at the North Kirkland Community Center.

Pickleball is the latest outdoor sports craze to hit the Long Beach Peninsula. On the two colorfully painted courts across the street from Ocean Park Elementary School, a group of enthusiasts enjoys the exercise and the camaraderie.
